What Causes Left-sided Shooting Pain From Abdomen Running Vertically Up To Heart?

I am a 64 year old Caucasian male in decent health for my age. I don't smoke and never have, I am not in an abnormally high stress job. I eat a mix of the Standard XXXXXXX Diet and other more vegetarian foods.
I do have an assortment of chronic pains due to various injuries to joints ect., hips needing replacement and 2 separated shoulders. The pains from these conditions are manageable. I take Glucosomine with Condroitin for my hips.
My symptom is a stinging shooting pain on the left side of my abdomen running vertically from the lower part of my heart down about 8 inches or so. I can lessen the pain by tightly clenching my stomach and abdominal muscles. The symptoms have been getting more frequent lately and I had one instance where I felt a little dizzy.
Any ideas?
Thank You

Please see your GP and get a ECG & Ultrasound done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX
The pain you mention seems to be more like a kidney pain possibly due to stone.
Do you have any stomach upset like nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea/ constipation?
It would be good to see your GP or a Doctor who can examine you. It will definitely be better to also to rule out a heart problem. You should undergo an ECG and an Ultrasound of the Abdomen, Pelvis and KUB to rule out any kidney or spleen problem. This should be able to diagnose what the problem is.
Till then you can start pain medicines and acid decreasing agents. I usually advice my patients medicines like Tab Paracetamol or Diclofenac sodium after meals and Tab Pantoprazole half an hour before meals. If the pain is severe then I advice you do not wait for the appointment and go to the ER for evaluation.
Do let me know if I can answer any more of your queries. I would be more than happy to do that.
Wish you a speedy recovery and great health in future.
Take care,
Dr Rishi, New XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
