What Causes Leg Pain And Painful Intercourse When Diagnosed With Superficial Thrombophlebitis?
Question: I have pain in my left leg which was like a tingling sensation. Skin was sore to touch. Pain in groin and discomfort on left side when having sex. DR thought maybe shingles but no rash. Diagnosed an infection in the saphenous vein. What would cause that?

Your symptoms do correlate with inflammation or infection of saphenous vein. However diagnosis can be confirmed on an ultrasound with doppler studies and MRV (venography) of the affected leg.
Normally trauma, or intravenous injections or canula insertion, recent surgery or transmission of infection from other sites through blood are the causes.
It increases the risk of thrombus formation so some screening tests need to be performed, like looking for D- Dimers and fibrinogen split products.
Take a course of antibiotics like augmentin or cephalosporins and for fever and pain using analgesics or anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen will help. Careful examination and work up for cellulitis or deep vein thrombosis, may be needed if swelling increases. Using pressure stockings will also help.
