What Causes Light Menstrual Bleeding Post Paragard Withdrawal?

Posted on Tue, 31 May 2016
Question: Hi. I am a 33 year old female. I am at a healthy weight and have no known medical conditions. I have a three year old daughter and had no issues with conception (less than 3 months of trying) with her. I have had the copper paragard in place for the last three years and had it removed over two months ago. My normal menses would last approximately five days before and while paragard was in place. Now I am trying to conceive and my last two periods have been very light lasting maybe two days with only one day of normal flow. (Day one and three are very light) What might be the cause of this and could it affect my fertility? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Wait for another 1-2 cycles. Need complete evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

Just 2 days short periods with 1 day normal or extremely light menstrual blood flow is known as hypomenorrhea.

Underlying cause could be adjustment of uterine cavity (after removal of IUD like Paragard), changes in bio-chemical parameter, ovarian cyst, anemia, pelvic or vaginal infection, thyroid disorder, high prolactin level, mental stress or emotional upset, over weight or sudden loss etc.

I suggest you to await another 1-2 cycles to get back your normal period. If it remains same or shorter length period, following investigations should be done.

I would order to undergo complete hormone profile including LH/ FSH, estrogen, progesterone, thyroid profile, serum prolactin, complete blood count including Hemoglobin % etc. General health check up and one pelvic examination will be helpful to confirm the diagnosis.

Hormonal therapy may be required according to test result to improve period cycle. Other specific treatment should be given after consultation with your treating doctor.

Take IRON supplements and healthy protein diet. Eat more green vegetables and drink more water
