What Causes Loss Of Voice In A Patient Suffering From Cold?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Mar 2016
Question: I lost my voice from a cold on January 10, 2016. It still has not completely recovered although the cold itself is gone. Is there anything else I can do for the throat, other than gargling with warm salted water? At what point should I actually start to worry about my voice not coming back 100%?

Brief Answer:
normally resolve within weeks

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hoarseness is due to laryngitis which is inflammation of the larynx. In most cases it resolves though it can take a few weeks.

If the problem persists for more than 3 weeks then it is called chronic laryngitis, if it lasts up to or beyond this time then you can see an ENT doctor for assessment of the larynx.

In addition to the gargling, other aspects of treatment are: (1) humidification- inhaling humidified air can help
(2)when speaking using soft voice is recommended. No whispering- this actually stresses the larynx. Medical literature recommend soft sighing voice.
(3)decrease or eliminate smoking if this is a problem
(4)treatment of any reflux that may be present since reflux can worsen hoarseness
(5) maintain good hydration

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
