Brief Answer:
Weight loss is due to losing appetite...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

If you have been diagnosed with Pneumonia, it is normal to get loss of appetite. I am happy that you can breath deep without any problem now.

Another factor that might have caused loss of appetite is related to medications you used to treat pneumonia.

Loosing weight is due to loss of appetite. Once you will get better, your appetite will come back. Consequently, you will gain the lost weight and be healthy again.

I finished my medication about 10 days ago. The other problem is that I start to cough when I am talking. It is not as bad as it was previously. The cough is not as deep but a little hacking now as compared to previously. How much longer is it going to take in your opinion before it is going to get back to normal.

Brief Answer:
You might need a couple of weeks to get normal...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

It is also normal to cough especially after speaking. As you speak, your throat gets sore, and then, cough starts. We call it dry cough as you do not have phlegm to expectorate.

Some of my patients with the same problems as you have reported getting back after a couple of weeks. Some others, instead, has got better within a month.

I advise to:
- continue drinking lots of fluids
- keep a good oral hygiene
- you can do gargle with water and salt
- take 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of honey on daily basis
- discuss with your doctor to take antihistamines for the cough for a few more days until improvement

Wish fast recovery!

What could be the reason for the cough to trigger in the evenings after supper. It is becoming very dry.

Brief Answer:
Possible heartburn/gastritis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

If the cough is triggering after supper (after eating), it might be related to :
- foods that you eat and raise acidity of the stomach
- possible heartburn/gastritis (especially after taking medications for pneumonia)

I advise to:
- not to lay down immediately after eating
- have a light supper
- take antacids
- have your supper at least 4 hours before going to bed
- avoid foods that cause hyperacidity of the stomach
- take anti-hystamine at bedtime

If after these changes, you will still have the dry cough, further evaluation by GI and pulmonologist is needed. You might need to start PPIs (omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc.) too.

Wish fast recovery!
