What Causes Low Appetite In A 1 Year Old?

Posted on Thu, 24 Jul 2014
Question: My 1 year old baby is very fussy with food. She is very reluctant on having food, especially breakfast. I manage to get 1 or 2 spoons after a lot of trouble. Her birth weight was 2.8 Kgs, at 6 months she was 5.6kgs, at 9 months she was 6kgs and haven't improved much. Infact her weight has not improved much after 6 months. She was 6.5kg on 1 year. However, she is a ery XXXXXXX and active kid, though she has not started walking yet. Her socializing skills are also amazing. But, I am worried with her weight gain. Could something be wrong?

Brief Answer:
Definitely needs full evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.
For a birth weight of 2.8kg , atleast 8kg is the expected weight at one year.
Your child needs complete evaluation .
I usually look for signs of vitamin , protein and mineral deficiencies . I also test such patients for hemoglobin, as many of them could be anemic.
Stool test may identify malabsorption .
If she is active and her other social skills are good, other body diseases are ruled out.
There is no harm in trying iron supplements like Trifer drops and multivitamin syrups like zincovit.
But do get her a complete health checkup as I had elaborated above.
Also deworm with albendazole once if not already done before.
Wishing speedy recovery.

I give her Ultra D3 (around 1ml) and Orofer(Iron) (around 0.5ml) daily.
She was having zincovit till around 6 months, but was stopped and moved to vitamin D & Iron as advised by her doctor.

2 months back, she was hospitalized due to vomitting and had a checkup done.
Her stool tests and blood tests were normal.

We did a Thyroid test as well. In that, there was a variation on her Free T3 result showing 4.26 *H (unit - pg/mL), whereas the biological reference range shows 2.5-3.9.

Brief Answer:
add zincovit

Detailed Answer:
The thyroid test is fine.
You can continue iron and also add zincovit.
It is possible that she had not gained weight because of the past illness.
Try these supplements for a month or two and recheck weight.
Try all kinds of food you eat.
Eggs, pulses should be given daily .
Ensure you add oil or ghee to each feed

Try eating together as a family .
