What Causes Low Platelet Count Prior To A Major Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: My father in law was to have carpal tunnel surgery

last Friday. He arrived at the hospital and was taken

to pre-op, where he was prepped for surgery. IV

fluids were started and all medical interviews

completed; Anesthesiologist included. Ten minutes

before he was set to enter the OR for surgery, the

Doctor came in and informed my father in law that he

would not be able to proceed with the operation due to

low platelets. My Father in law was told he has to

see a Hematologist Oncologist ASAP. His counts had

dropped from 111 to 95 in a only a week. He is very

very fatigued and not acting like his normal self

(outgoing and always joking). This is NOT normal for

him and it has me VERY concerned. My husband and his

father are very close and not having an answer of any

kind is tearing him up. It breaks my heart. I am

looking for answers that are XXXXXXX and straightforward

as to what we could be facing. Any wisdom that can be

provided is greatly appreciated. Thank you and God

Bless!

Brief Answer:
we should search the cause of low platelet count.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
He has carpal tunnel syndrom and surgery is required.

His platelet count is slightly low.
Its not a cause of big worry. Dropping of platelet count from 111 to 95 is not a major issue. It can be due to normal variation and instrument variation.

However he has slightly low platelet count that is sure. There are msny cause of low platelet count. Simple viral infection, malaria, vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, other infection are the common cause of low platelet count.
Please send me his other reports of complete blood count and other reports which he has already gone through. So that I can help you further.

Don't worry it doesn't look serious.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
