What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain Post Menopause?

Question: I am 58 yrs old. Haven't had a period since I was 50. I have what appears to be pain just like I had when I used to ovulate. The pain is off & on & in my lower left ovary area. Sometimes I also have it in my right ovary area. Why am I still having this pain even though I do not have periods anymore?

Hi,

I would suggest that you get an ultrasound scan of your abdomen to look for the status of your ovaries. As if there is an ovarian cyst or something that is causing you pain then it will easily be picked up. Also it will tell the condition of your uterus and tubes and help put more light on your periods like pain.

As further management will depend upon the findings of the usg.

I had a pelvic exam this year by an ob/gyn & he said everything looked fine. Pap smear came back ok. Would he not be able to detect this just by a pelvic exam?

depends upon the size of the cyst

Hi,

Small ovarian cysts may get missed on pelvic examination and so do small fibroids.

Also usg will screen your kidneys and ureters for any stone, as they can also cause pain in that area.

And any other mass or tumour in the abdominal cavity can be screened for.
