What Causes Lower Back Pain After Waking Up In The Mornings?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: My husband who is 58 years old is having problems with lower back pain upon rising in the morning. After he walks around it gets less and less painful. The only other symptom he speaks of is having trouble keeping small amounts of urine from seeping out without his control. Our family doctor doesn't think it is prostate related and is in fact due to the bony structure of his hips. Is there something else we need to be looking at?

Brief Answer:
Needs proper evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your husband has pain in lower back and involuntary dribbling urination with urgency.

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Does he have other urinary symptoms like increased frequency.nocturnal frequency, weak urinary stream etc?

Involuntary urination could be due to Over Active Bladder or Enlarged prostate which is common at this age.

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and Culture
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Serum PSA.

He may take anti muscuranic drug like Darifenacin once daily to control involuntary passage of few drops of urine .

Further treatment will depend upon the results of these tests and final diagnosis.

Bony structure of the hip bones has no relations to these symptoms .

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to write if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards .

He does have a weak urine stream, but other than the pain upon waking he has no other symptoms. Our family doctor is currently doing a PSA test we are waiting on the results of that. One thing I forgot to mention, he is using Androgel 1.62% testosterone ointment daily and one of the listed side effects is an enlarged prostate gland. He has been using the Androgel for several years now. We are hoping that the pain is also a result of and only a side effect of using the Androgel.
Thanks.

Enlarged prostate can be confirmed or ruled out only on doing Ultrasound Scanning.

As regards Androgel that he is taking since many years it will not cause pain per say but it does causes Enlargement of prostate .

Please get Scanning done to be rest assured about enlarged Prostate.
