Brief Answer:
many causes

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.
Left lower abdominal pain can be coming from the bladder, the uterus or ovaries (if you have not had a hysterectomy) or the colon.
If you are having any vaginal or urinary symptoms then you need to see a doctor for a pelvic exam and urinalysis.
If you are having any constipation then this could be the cause and using a stool softener or laxative may help.
A common cause of left lower quadrant pain is diverticulitis. This usually requires antibiotics to clear it.
If you ever had a colonoscopy and it found diverticula then this is a possibility.
Taking a probiotic, drinking plenty of fluids, taking the advil and using the heating pad are great things to try, but if it is not working then you need to see a doctor.
If the pain becomes severe, if you develop fever or vomiting then you should be seen immediately even if that means going to the emergency department.
I hope you are feeling better soon,
Dr. Robinson
