What Causes Lump On Back Of Neck?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Oct 2014
Question: My 10 year old daughter felt a small lump at the back of her neck on the left side. I can barely find it, it is so small. It is at the base of her neck, above the shoulder. It does not hurt when pushed on. She said it feels soft, but again, I can barely find it, so it is hard for me to tell if it is hard or soft, or if it can be moved or not. I am not sure what to make of it.

Brief Answer:
Small lump

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
What your daughter is feeling is a lymph node. We all have them. They are there to help us fight infection. A lymph node that can be felt is harmless as long as the following is present:
1. It is moveable
2. It is not painful.
As long as these things are present, it is a healthy lymph node. If not, it is possible the node is infected and needs to be treated with antibiotic. In this case, I recommend consulting with your doctor.
