What Causes Lymph Node Swellings On The Supra-clavicular And Post Cervical Area?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: I have a supraclavicular lymph node and posterior cervical lymph node, left side of neck x 4 weeks after tick bite. Are these likely the result of tick bite? they are both pea-sized moveable, firm. I am 52 y/o female. took 14 days Augmentin prescribed for lymph node swelling - still the same size not worse. Also, how long before they should resolve?

Brief Answer:
Need to have re assessment with investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

The persisting lymph node swellings on the supra-clavicular and post cervical group even after a course of antibiotics do not seem to be solely due to tick bite. I do agree with your doctor that you might need a chest x ray if these persist after this course.

If I were your doctor, I would also clinically examine you in detail with special attention to your chest and abdomen. I would also advise you for a self assessment of breasts on both sides. If all these findings including the x ray chest and other routine blood tests come out to be inconclusive, I would send you to a general surgeon for a possible FNAC/excision biopsy of the enlarged lymph node to rule out any other pathology.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
