You should know that the most common cause of brown vaginal discharge is due to an irregular or incomplete period. In most the cases of brownish discharge the older blood of menses which gets retained and therefore usually gives a brownish appearance.
It is due to the fact that the normal menstrual blood takes bit longer to get evacuated. One more important fact is that brownish discharge is also quite common in women who are going through menopause or postmenopausal phase.
In cases of brownish discharge can be due to sexually transmitted infection such as gonorrhea or chlamydia infection. But in all these cases there are additional symptoms of irritation and inflammation with itching in the vaginal area which are not present in your case.
