What Causes Menstruation After 7 Months During Menopause?
I am a 53 year old woman with a last menstrual period on Nov. 7. That period was long and light, about 10 days. Before that, my last period was in April. I have just had a negative pap smear. I was tested for FHS levels and my level was 55. My doctor told me despite my last period my FSH level indicates I have definitely gone through menopause and the bleeding I have is not normal. I had a sonohysterogram that revealed one polyp. I was told if I bleed again for any reason more tests must be done. I thought definite menopause can only be determined by 12 months without a period. I am confused. Any thoughts?
polypectomy and endometrial biopsy
Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, yes definite clinical evidence of menopause is absence of periods for 1 year.
But this is a subjective clinical evidence whereas FSH is an objective and definite evidence of menopause.
It makes it certain that you have transited in menopause.
The bleeding which is light and long is a post menopausal bleed and is not normal definitely so needs evaluation.
After evaluation there is a polyp as told by your gynecologist and in case it bleeds now then you need to have a polypectomy and endometrial biopsy to see for the cause of bleeding.
If biopsy is normal then it is certain that bleeding was just due to polyp and there are chances that you don't bleed ever after this.
All the best and in case you have further questions I will be glad to help.
