What Causes Mood Changes After Taking Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: How long should I take a birth control pill to know it is working and/or to ride out possible side effects? I started taking the pill on Saturday and I think it is already making me more depressed. Is this normal to feel something already so soon? I just want to make sure I stick it out for the proper amount of time.

I need to take a birth control pill to make my periods come back as I am only 37 and have not had a period for two years. My FSH levels are normal and my doctor says its better if I take a pill to treat my PCOS. She prescribed me a very lose dose birth control pill. The last time I took a bcp, I became manic, had racing thoughts and heart and it scared me. I would rather feel depressed than that.

Brief Answer:
Consult a gynaecologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Birth control pills have many side effects including mood changes which usually manifest within 6-7 days of starting pills. Since you have a history of mania and some unbearable side effects you should immediately stop birth control pills.
Absence of menstruation for 2 years at this age can due to ovarian failure, uterine pathology or pituitary problems.
Since your FSH is normal ovarian and pituitary causes are ruled out. So uterine pathologies like asherman's syndrome , tuberculosis and thyroid disorder should be ruled out.
I would suggest to review with an gynaecologist and get proper evaluation, investigations and management.
Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
Regards,
Dr Deepti Verma.
