What Causes Mood Swings, Depression, Headache And Dizziness While Having Mirena IUD?

Question: This question is regarding my daughter. She had a Mirena IUD put in on April 26th and within a week after the device was placed the nightmare began - endless crying, feelings of panic and despair, depression, hopelessness, feelings of impending doom, absence of emotion, fatigue, foggy brain, joint and back pain, gastritis and blurred, distorted vision, lack of emotion, constant crying, nothing interests her any more. She had it removed 20 days later on May 16th and is still experiencing the lack of emotion and constant crying - no interest in anything even though she was just reunited with her boyfriend after 2 months. She was prescribed Ativan to help her emotions, but it is not helping. Do you have any suggestions for her? She has been sobbing almost constantly for 3 days. She did have a few days good last week when she thought she was on the road to recovering - now it is much worse.

Brief Answer:
Get a neurologist or psychiatrist consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Mood disorders, depression, headache, dizziness are side effects related to drug.
After removal of mirena, the symptoms should gradually improve.
If ativan is not having adequate benefits, then quetiapin or olanzapine can be tried.
A neurologist or psychiatrist evaluation and follow up is required.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

I am concerned that you have suggested a neurologist or psychiatrist - is this something that could have done permanent damage after only 20 days in her uterus? To my thinking a very large amount of hormones must have been released to cause such extreme symptoms. Are quetiapin and olanzapine addictive medications?

Brief Answer:
Take treatment under psychiatrist guidance

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
No, these side effects have no permanent damage.
Side effects are not dose dependant and some person may have undue greater sensitivity to same drug.
Quetiapine or olanzapine can be addictive if used in higher dosage and longer time. It is advisable to take such medications under a psychiatrist guidance.
