What Causes Muffled Hearing, Ear Pain And Clogged Ears?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: My ear feels like it always has an ear plug in it and, when I speak, my words sounds muffled in it. I have tried ear drops for wax and a suction bulb, but they have not helped. Every once in a while, I will get a dull pain, but, otherwise, it's not painful at all. Just annoying.

Brief Answer:
It may not be due to wax

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your symptoms may not be due to wax and maybe due to a condition called secretory otitis media. In this condition there is accumulation of fluid behind the ear drums causing muffled hearing and dull pain.

There are many reasons for this condition including allergies , smoking, etc

The treatment includes measures to open up the eustachian tube, which is a normal tube connecting the ear to the back of your nose. I usually start my patients on decongestant nasal drops like Oxymetazoline followed by steam inhalation thrice a day.

The best thing would be to meet an ent doctor who will confirm this and try to find the cause. He will also prescribe you the necessary medicines.
