Multiple sclerosis (MS) results from immune system attacking the axons (wires) of the neurons in the central nervous system( brain, spinal cord). The initial promoting event of MS is still not clear but the cascade of immune cells is pretty well described and its as follows first the immune system has the innate and the adaptive parts something triggers the innate system to cause toll like receptors TLRs which secretes cytokines that affects the work of the adaptive immune system (B cells and T cells) causing an inflammation the target of this inflammation is the axons of the neurons leading to loss of the sheath of the myelin which causes the neurological problems.
So current state of the art laboratories are trying to focus on how to suppress this immune reaction, how to stop cells from crossing the blood brain barrier, what is the first evoking factor is it a virus? a microbe? is there any genetic, environmental cause to it? sadly so many questions but good thing many people are working on finding a solution and ways to stop it from happening and from progressing.
