What Causes Muscle Pain In The Legs Upon Exertion?

The fatigue/pain started 2 years ago and has gotten worse.
Carnitine deficiency
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your complaints and medical history in detail.
Muscle pain, leg pain after a fast walk or short run are signs of carnitine deficiency.
Carnitine is essential for normal contraction and relaxation of the muscle and maintaining proper muscle tone.
L- carnitor tablets can help maintain this and in turn reduce the muscular pain.
Other possibilities that need to be considered are-
1. Lumbar canal stenosis- Nerve root compression in lumbar spine due to narrowed lateral spinal canal can cause such kind of pain.
2.Side effect of blood pressure medication- Some blood pressure medicines ,when taken for long periods of time, cause muscle weakness leading to pain. You can consult your physician to confirm this.
3.Peripheral vascular disease- Reduced blood supply to muscles due to constricted arteries in the legs can also cause such claudication pain.Arterial color doppler of the legs will confirm this.
I hope this answer was useful.
You can get back to me if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.
Kind regards.

I purchased N-Acetyl_L-Carnitine 750 mg as that was the only available at Whole Foods. Started taking them yesterday.
Will that do the same as L-Carnitine?
My own Doctor had suggested the problem to be sciatica which I guess is the same as lumbar canal stenosis. But that was symptom based without any other tests. Are there tasts that I should request?
I am planning on skiing with my grandson in a couple of years so hope this works.

Hello and Welcome back.
N-Acetyl_L-Carnitine 750 mg is same as L-carnitine.You can continue taking it.
You are right. Sciatica is a clinical presentation of Lumbar canal stenosis.
This can be confirmed by an MRI of lumbar spine.
I would definitely recommend you getting it don..
Let me know the results once you get it done.
Thank you.

I have an appointment with my Physician today and will schedule the MRI. I am in Canada and the wait for an MRI using public health can be 8 to 10 months but we are able to go to private clinics if we pay ourselves which I will do, it will still take some time, I will report the results to you when I receive them.
The blood pressure medication that I take is called Ramipril, 10 mg daily I was advised 25 years ago that it helps to ensure that another heart attack is less likely to be fatal. Is this one that can cause muscle weakness and cramps?
My blood pressure taken this minute is 142 over 71 measured at home with an OMRON.
And the Prilosec (Omeprazole)that I have taken for many years is 20 mg daily. I have read that this medication can reduce the potassium in our system so I now take potassium supplement daily but the writeup on Ramipril says NOT to take potassium.
Very complicated!
Thank you for your help, very impressive website.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Omeprazole is comparatively a safer drug and does not cause much side effects.
But you have been taking it for many years now and it may cause potassium loss.
Please get potassium levels checked before starting potassium supplements.
You should not take potassium with ramipril, yes, but if the blood reports indicate deficiency, you should take it under supervision of your doctor.
Thank you.
I shall wait for your reports.
Best wishes.
Take care
