What Causes Muscle Twitching After A Herpes Outbreak?
Side effects of medication
Detailed Answer:
Good evening and thank you for your question on this network.
Muscle twitching as you describe is typically not a direct consequence of the herpes infection but when it occurs we believe it is either a direct toxic effect of the antiviral drug itself or an effect on the kidneys which can result in muscle twitching.
If I were your doctor I would measure renal function tests for creatinine, BUN, and even a 24 hr. total creatinine as this could be elevated while the other indices are still normal. You can help yourself immensely by HYDRATING A LOT......flush those kidneys and keep the tubules open and clear and this could possibly reduce twitching.
If your herpes rash has resolved then, I would have a dialogue with the primary doctor to see if stopping the drug may be appropriate. I understand there is the desire to be on prophylactic therapy but you MAY need a drug holiday as well. The twitching may be your body's way of telling someone that fact.
