What Causes Nausea After Meal When Suffering From Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: 44 y/o female with hypothyroidism (tested recently in the "normal" range), 5'4", 235 lbs. Over the past few months, I have been getting nauseated after each meal - regardless of how big or small, regardless of what I eat. After about two hours, the nausea passes. During those couple of hours, I sweat, dry heave, mouth waters, I have a burning sensation in my stomach and I can feel acid in the back of my throat. I feel genuinely sick. I drink water all day, with no sodas... Any idea what this could be?

Brief Answer:
symptoms are in keeping of reflux

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Nausea, burning in chest, acid taste in the mouth, excess salivation are symptoms that are normally associated with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Some persons may also experience bloating, cough.

Treatment involves lifestyle changes such as: (1) even though the symptoms occur with any size meals, it would be best to use small frequent meals rather than large meals

(2)reduce or eliminate caffeine

(3)also reduce use of tomato products, onions, mint, citrus fruits, spicy foods, fried/fatty foods

(4)wait 2 hours after eating before laying down

(5)weight loss , if needed ,can help as well because it reduces compression on the stomach

(6)medications- the proton pump inhibitors are the best medications but they can take 5 to 7 days to take an effect because they prevent further acid production but do not suppress the acid already present

For the first 5 to 7 days, one of these should be combined with pepcid or zantac

Eg of proton pump inhibitors are : nexium, aciphex, protonix, prilosec, prevacid

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
