What Causes Nausea Along With Rashes On Body?
Question: Hello Dr Rynne, My husband became ill quite suddenly two days ago. He felt nauseous, hot and cold and ended up vomiting but only the once. He put himself to bed. I noticed first he looked very pale, then later in the day his face was very red. The next day, yesterday, he said he felt better but knew he wasn't a hundred percent so was taking it easy. Around 4pm he noticed a rather nasty red rash all over his shin on his left leg and it is very hot to touch. His leg and foot are quite swollen. He is also feeling very hot. What do you suggest it could be and what is the best form of treatment please?

1. Having only one episode of nausea and vomiting might be related to food poisoning or allergy if it occurred after eating ( please recall if he was eating / drinking something new from his usual meal.
2.With regards to redness he is having on the shin of his leg, I need to have a look at it. Can you please provide a picture?
From what you are describing, it seems to be allergy or skin infection ( erysipela).
Erysipela is a bacterial infection that is treatedwith long term course of antibiotics of penicillin group.
Local cold compresses are also advised.

I have gone through the pictures you sent to me, and the redness is erysipela (bacterial infection of the skin).
I have noted that his skin is also a little bit dry as per the photo.
I highly advise to consult with his physician and /or dermatologist as soon as possible as he needs to start oral antibiotics.
Meanwhile, I advise to :
- keep his leg at rest and raised
- apply cold compresses
- applying saline compresses can also help recovering the wound
- give anti inflammatory medications
Once again, get immediate consultation with dermatologist or his physician to start immediate treatment.
