What Causes Nausea And Vomiting?
Question: Dear Dr. ,
My stomach has been making me feel nausea without vomiting , since last Saturday morning from drinking. I really did not drink so much as to feel this badly let alone have it last this long. I of course am not supposed to be drinking because I have some pre-ulcerative issues. Gastritis is what it's been called. I have a mild annoying pain at the top of my stomach, i take 40 mg of omneprozole(prilosec)twice daily. I have alcoholism, I thought that I could have just a couple of drinks but I always trick myself that way and drink to much. I have some sucarate but i still don't feel well. what can i do?

Thank you Dr.
I drank about 7 beers on friday night. And yes that is when it began Saturday morning. I was smoking cigars also. Yes I was doing okay on the omeprazole. I just need to stop drinking and smoking. My last liver tests were good that was only months ago that my blood was checked. And yes my condition does improve over time, and it does not hurt while I eat. Last year a Dr. prescribed me Sucralfate 1 GM. I just want to know if you think it is an ulcer or not. I mean I just don't feel great, sore throat body aches. I've gotten somewhat better throughout the day it's just the nausea. But I never vomit or have diarhea, from this.

Brief Answer:
Not ulcer but gastritis plus alcohol overdose.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back, in such detail , your answer was really well put together, detailed and helpful.
It helped me to come up with more precise idea.
You asked if that can be an ulcer, actually accroding to your history , description , drugs you are using and symptoms, ulcers look like a remote possibility.
Even if there is an ulcer, it must be a minor one and doesn't look like contributing in causing the symptoms.
Your symptoms are very suggestive of body's response to alcohol abuse.
Body keeps on compensating alcohol use but with time signs of abuse start to show, and your smoking is adding to the insult, plus smoking also increases likelihood of getting gastric issue like gastritis and ulcers.
According to research binge drinking is far more dangerous as compared to chronic medium quantity drinking.
With time it can cause liver damage leading ti cancer or cirrhosis plus GIt and brain damage, it can also lead to dilated heart is which has no cure.
Suggestions:
1- Don't drink any more try to leave this habit.
2- If you feel like addicted, join some rehab and it can really help you. Key is your determination.
3- In my clinic i suggest my patients to take tablet plasil wih enzymes or its alternative, twice a day it really helps them.
4- Quit smoking gradually , its not good for stomach , heart and lungs.
5- You dont seem to be having ulcer but gastritis seems to be there so avoid fizzy drinks, sour , fried foods and caffeinated drinks.
6- Stay active walk for 20 mins daily.
7- Use fluids frequently .
8- Get a full body checkup to rule out any liver issues . Blood works and ultrasound would be handy, its not urgent but you might wanna get it done soon.
What to expect:
Things are expected to get better real soon , as alcohol drains out of your system it will get better .. stay calm and things will get better in 2-3 days. Avoid alcohol in future.
You problem is not serious but in future it can become one ..if care isnt taken.
I hope it answered your question. If you have more i am happy to answer.
Wish you health:)
