What Causes Nausea, Dizziness, Sweating, And Numbness After Bariatric Surgery?
Question: Hi, my husband is diabetic, type 2, post-surgery (barriatric), he is 63 ears old. He became very ill this morning with symptoms of nausea, dizziness, sweating, and numbness. His blood sugar had dropped to 56, so I gave him juice, a banana and a little bread. What else shall I do? Can this cause permanent damage? Thank you.

This is called Hypoglycemia.
It can be a medical emergency if the symptoms are severe and prolonged such as unresponsiveness or seizures. Potentially, brain damage can be irreversible too.
When I see someone in my practice with this problem, I order the following tests in addition to a thorough physical examination:
CBC
CMP
A1c
TSH
Free T4
I also consider ordering other tests based on the findings on examination such as 8 am serum Cortisol.
The episode of low sugar should be managed with food/beverage to raise it into the normal range, or at least above 100, preferably followed by a meal depending on the situation.
At your next appointment with his endocrinologist, discuss ways to avoid this from happening and perhaps re-organize his medications
