What Causes Negative Urine Test Despite Taking Medication The Same Day?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Nov 2015
Question: How can a urine test come up negative if you have taken the medication the day of the test? Does how you take it, ingesting, snorting, intravenously, etc. possibly change the outcome? Will a follow-up test that delves deeper show that the drug is in the system?

Brief Answer:
How you take the medicine is extremely important.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The way of drug intake is extremely important. Chemical substances are build to be absorbed in one, specific way only. That is why we have tablets, syringes and inhalers. You can not swallow intravenous medicine as it can be not absorbed at all. It will just flow through your digestive tract and excreted with the stool.
Its like swallowing the air instead of aspirating it. It does not work in that way.

So if you snorted drug which supposed to be eaten, it wont appear in the urine test as you literally do not have it in your body. In such case, even more specific follow-up test can be negative.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

So I literally may have screwed myself thinking I was getting pain relief quicker. Is there a chance it will show since I had been taking this drug daily for awhile. I'm not going to lie, it was by snorting, but I did not take more than one dose at a time. I was not looking to get high because I didn't get high, but I was getting pain relief quicker.

Dr. XXXXXXX H Sheppe said snorting a drug did not decrease it's half life, so I'm confused. If it does not decrease it's half life how is it I do not have it in my body. I am not taking any of this as advice I should do over what my doctor tells me. I am just asking questions I'm afraid to ask my doctor. I know this web site is not something I should do over what my doctor says, but any help in clearing up my confusion would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Snorting it does not deliver proper dosage of the medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Well, it does not decrease the half life for sure. Especially that most of the drug stays in your nose and is eliminated with the mucus or gets to the lungs. It does not change the half life as there is no drug in your bloodstream at all or in minimal amount. Its because the chemical structure of the drug most likely can not be absorbed through nasal mucosa.
Snorting it, you could get some kind of pain relief. But it could be an effect of getting somehow high. I am not sure because never heard about snorting this kind of drug (I assume we are talking about Oxymorphone smashed to the powder and snorted).

You are assuming correctly. I did not know it wasn't getting into my bloodstream because I WAS getting pain relief quickly and it would last. Now, I have screwed myself out of a PM doctor. I tested negative and didn't understand why. They were sending it to Florida for confirmation, basically a more in depth test. I wasn't worried because in my mind, key words "in my mind", I WAS taking the prescription. Now, I have screwed myself. But I am confused as to how the other urine tests (I've been seeing him for months) were positive. Further adding to my confusion.

Brief Answer:
Maybe it would be good to tell about it to your doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Its hard to compare one urine test to another urine test when the drug was taken with non standard way. Maybe on the other time you have swallowed more of the drug for example with runny nose. But this is just a theory.
Now in my opinion, you should tell about it to your doctor, start taking the drug as it supposed to be taken and everything should get back to normal.

If the doctor keeps me I will give him full disclosure. I do not like this anxiety. I do not like the possibility of being cut off immediately and having to go thru withdrawals. I do not like having to endure the very real pain.
Thank you, Dr. Stanko for your time and patience in answering my inquiries. I will probably keep asking until 11/18 when I see him again. Somehow it calms me even if I don't hear what I want to. I will try not to bother you again.
