What Causes Nocturnal Leg Cramps?
Question: I have terrible nocturnal leg cramps in the top of my ankle (the "crook" part of my feet between foot and leg), my calf, and the worst ones are in my inner thigh. Not every night, predominantly my left leg except the ankle cramps. They are in both feet. My Dr has checked my bloodwork. Potassium is good, magnesium slightly low so I take a magnesium citrate supplement. The cramps at my inner thigh are absolutely debilitating and last between a couple minutes to 10-15 minutes. They are excruciating and immobilizing. I have an appt with a neurologist but can't get in for 3 months. I can't be the only person with these horrid things. PLEASE HELP!!
Brief Answer:
Some other conditions to consider.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Besides low magnesium in blood, other causes of muscle cramps include problems with blood supply of the affected extremity ( arteriosclerosis ), nerve compression ( lumbar spine stenosis ), so, besides continuing magnesium supplement, getting checked about these conditions also is necessary.
In mean time, staying well hydrated, stretching exercises, use of drugs that promote muscles relaxation ( especially during the night ), are necessary to improve your condition.
Discuss with your Doctor about these issues.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Kind regards.
