What Causes Nose Bleed, Ear Pain And Feeling Of Liquid In Ears?
My nose just bled for 10 minutes. A few minutes after it stopped bleeding, I started feeling ear pain on the same side as the nostril that bled. Since then I have the impression I have liquid in both ears, a feeling I did not have prior to the nose bleed. Is it typical to have ear pain associated with a nose that bled? Should I consult or it is something that will resume on its own? Thank you for your advice.
Headache and ear discomfort are common after bleed
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting the query
Ear block and headache are very common during the episode of the nasal bleed.
Nasal bleed of profuse in intensity happens due to sudden increase in the blood pressure causing rupture of the tiny aneurysms present in the arteries. Due to increase in the pressure there will nasal congestion causing swelling around the opening of the Eustachian tube and the sinuses.
Eustachian tube block presents as earache and block, while that of the sinuses presents as headache.
My suggestions to you are:
1. Use nasal decongestant (xylometazoline or oxymetazoline) available over the counter (for not more than 5 days). This stops the bleeding as well as alleviates the nasal congestion.
2. Drink plenty of warm water. This helps in reducing the congestion around the Eustachian tube and the paranasal sinuses.
3. Do steam inhalation. Warm air reduces the congestion around the sinuses.
4. Avoid forceful sneezing or blowing of the nose.
Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
