Question: HI - A couple days ago i woke up and the fingers on my left hand were numb and my head was foggy. I wrote it off to a bad night of sleep, but it has persisted. Today i also noticed some tingling in my face and I felt cold. Normally I am like a furnace. Thoughts?

Brief Answer:
To rule out vascular neurological disorder....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through the details provided. You reported to have developed sudden onset sensory disturbances involving left limb and face on two occasions. I also noted that the symptoms started upon waking up from sleep.

Well, the symptoms do not convincingly point towards a condition. However given the fact that it started abruptly upon waking, it would be worthwhile to see a doctor and rule out vascular neurological disorder. In simple words, I meant XXXXXXX strokes. I arrived at this particular condition after considering your age. I insist you not to ignore these symptoms particularly if you have medical history of high blood pressure, blood sugar, smoking, obese and family history of heart attack/stroke.

The other close contender is acute demyelinating condition. But as you haven't reported similar complaints persistently in the past, I do not favour demyelination here.

You will be asked to undergo battery of blood tests that include blood sugar, ESR, cholesterol check, homocysteine level, vitamin b12 and a brain scan after detailed neurological examination. EEG recording may be necessary too.

In brief, at this age, it is not advisable to write off those symptoms. It doesn't mean you need to press the panic button. But it is definitely worthwhile to call your doctor and fix an appointment with a neurologist.

Hope this helped you. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
