What Causes Numbness And Tingling In Left Thigh?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Dec 2015
Question: I have had numbness and a tingling sensation in my left thigh for quite sometime. My entire outer thigh itches quite often and is sensitive to touch. Last night while sleeping on my back I was awakened to excruciating burning in my thigh that lasted for about 30 seconds. This happened twice. Today my thigh is extremely sensitive to touch and feels like the skin or muscle is being stretched when I move certain ways. At times there is a small burst of burning pain that just lasts for a few seconds at a time.

Brief Answer:
Meralgia Paresthetica

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you are having this unusual pain. This is called meralgia paresthetica. It is caused by the femoral cutaneous nerve along your waist being pinched. It can be pinched from being overweight, wearing tight clothing or tight belts. The treatment is usual weight loss or reducing the tightness and medication. the usual medication is gabapentin which is a nerve medication. Since the pinch is related to nerve pain and giving you those hypersensitive feelings the gabapentin helps reduce that hypersensitivity.
