What Causes Numbness And Tingling Of Toe After Broken Toe Of Left Foot?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Jun 2014
Question:
Since I broke the outside bone on my left foot below my little toe, July, 2013, I have bruising on the top of that foot. Also, almost everyday, my toes-except for the big toe-get numb and tingling. I have to take my shoe off and massage them. The only shoes I have comfort wearing are my Crocs cloggs, but they are not nice enough to wear to the office...
Any suggestions on what is causing the bruising and tingling/numbness? What can I do to help alleviate the symptoms?Any suggestions would be much appreciated! :)

Brief Answer:
Union of bone needs to confirmed

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
After going through your suffering, I want to know is the bone united? I need to see the latest x-ray picture in the follow up query. All the symptoms described by you may be present with non union of bone.
For now my advice would be take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6. The drug pregablin may help to relieve your symptoms, for this discuss with your treating doctor as this is prescription only drug.
Please tell - 1. Is the skin over the affected foot area swollen and inflamed with skin extremely sensitive to touch and to hot or cold temperatures?
2. Is the affected foot perspire excessively and be warm to the touch?

I hope this information will be helpful and I shall be glad to answer further.
Take care

Thank you Dr. Chugh,

I do not have a picture of my last x-ray, but I remembering the doctor telling me that the bone was growing back, and that I did not have to have surgery. I could see from that x-ray that there was bone matter growing the big break back together, and the smaller 'breaks' were looking 'normal' again. but I did notice that the bone on the outside of the foot, from the latest x-ray, was sticking out a little. Of course I wasn't staying off of it as much as I should have, but I did elevate it when I could, at work and at home. Touching the side of the foot, I do not feel any kind 'lump.'

The skin over the affected foot area, on the top of the foot, (not really the side of the left foot), does swell from time to time, and it always seems to be bruised. Looking at both feet, there is a difference in color.

The doctor said that the little toe would pivot to the side, and shrink a little, and it has done that. there is no sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or touch. I do not notice perspiration or warmth to touch. I usually have a shoe or slipper or socks on so I'm not sure if the warmth of the foot is from it being covered or not. I will try to notice that when do not have my foot covered, if there is warmth to the affected area.

I am suppose to take a calcium and vitamin D supplement, but I'm not very good at that... I will look into the B12 & B6 supplements. I'd rather get my vitamins and minerals from the food I eat.

I don't like to have too many x-rays. I was refusing them, because the doctor always wanted to take three of them every visit. I told him just one, from the top. But because this is bothering me, I should probably go have another.

(I have gained about 20 pounds in the last six months. I lost my best friend about 10 months ago, then my brother and dad passed away in December 2013, three days apart. We had five months of cold, cold winter, and I was not very motivated. I have plans to loose the weight... can't afford all new clothes! Twenty pounds is a lot of extra weight!)

Do you think there might be some nerve damage/problems?

Thank you again, Dr. Chugh

Sincerely,
XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy may be a cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello
It’s good to see you
After going through the whole discussion and especially your reply it seems that the broken bone has healed (united).
Now coming back to the suffering, the most likely cause seems to be’’ Reflex sympathetic dystrophy’’, that is overactive sympathetic nervous system. This is part of nervous system which controls activity of visceral organs and blood vessel. This needs physical examination to confirm. Some symptoms of yours are suggestive of this (Reflex sympathetic dystrophy).
For now you may have drugs like pregablin along with vitamin B12, B6 for your neuropathic pain under medical guidance.
You might have gain weight because of loss of physical activity as a result of fracture. I am feeling bad for the untimely death of your near ones. May God give you the courage to get over from your suffering?
Take care and wish you good health
