What Causes Numbness Following A Dental Surgery?

The numbness following the dental surgery could be because of the nerve injury during administration of the local anesthesia(needle injury) or it can be because of the pressure applied by the instruments or teeth during tooth removal. The numbness following dental surgery is not very common, most of the time if the tooth root is very near to the nerve then while removing the tooth nerve can get compressed.
The recovery time depends on the amount of injury to the nerve. If the injury is very minor then it might takes weeks. if the injury is mild then it might take months. If the injury is severe then the sensation might not return.
Consult a neurophysician if the numbness persists even after one month.
If I am your treating doctor I would have suggested you to take nerve regenerating drugs like capsule neurobion (vitamin B6 and B12) once daily for 30days. Take special care when you consume hot and cold since you will not be able to sense that area.
