Question: Helo I am 29 years old and have had implanon in my arm for 9 years changing it every 3 years.i have never had a problem with implanon and been very happy with it.i had the last one removed and nexplanon 68mg implant put in XXXXXXX 2013.for the last 4 days I have had numbness in my left hand the same side as my implant which has progressively got worse.the top part of my hand is fine but the lower part feels dead.my arm feels heavy and I cannot get a grip on things when I try to pick them up.i didnt think for a moment it had anything to do with my implant until I looked up the symptoms on the internet.do you think it is linked to my implant? And why have I never had these symptoms before? Please advise me on the best thing to do
Brief Answer:
Doesn't sound like implanon
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
The symptoms that you describe do not sound like they could all originate from a nerve that are accessible at the time of nexalon insertion.
Rather this sounds more like a radiculopathy. the source would originate from a major nerve much closer to the spine. I am concerned about your symptoms and worried there may be compression of one of the neck nerves from a herniated desk. I would strongly recommend that you see a neurologist.
Muscle testing and imaging of the disks in the neck are important. If this does represent compression it will be important to release the pressure on the nerve in order to preserve function.
This is an emergency situation. if you cannot get an appointment within 24 hours or if your symptoms get ANY worse it is so important for you see the neurologist I suggest you go to the nearest emergency room, preferably one associated with specialists or able to transfer you to one that is.
I would encourage you to let go of the idea that it's related to your Implanon. Should the placement of you Implanon result in a nerve problem it would have occurred immediately. If you can palpate your device this is further reassurance. The Internet is a wonderful thing though its utility in answering a specific medical question is very limited. That's why we're here.
I hope this answer helps. I hope you're feeling better soon.
