Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: Hi I have numbness in my left leg after starting antibiotics for a uti. Are these two symptoms linked or is there something else going on? It started during sleep and has stuck around all day, it's not painful, I can still move around normally with no clumsiness or pins and needles.

Brief Answer:
Probably unrelated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms.

Cilex (cephalexin) is a safe antibiotic without any side effects on the peripheral nerves.

So, your current numbness in the left leg is most probably unrelated to the use of antibiotics.

The most probable reason could be mechanical compression of the skin nerve during sleep. In that case, we expect recovery within a few days. If that does not happen, you may see a doctor.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

I should of noted that I am quite over weight and have high blood pressure, I gave up heavy marijuana 2 months ago, due to an anxiety attack, could the numbness be linked to ab12 defficancy ? Or weed withdrawals? Since quitting I get the occasional shortness of breath, but this didnt happen while I was smoking.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be weed withdrawal.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back with more information.

Weed withdrawal is unlikely to be the cause, as you stopped it two months ago.

Vitamin B12 deficiency usually causes symptoms on both sides, however, a blood test for vitamin B12 level may be done to exclude that possibility.

Thank you for your time, I have become really XXXXXXX conscious since my panic attack and have changed a lot of things in my life, eg change of diet and I have been walking, but as I said before I still get a slight breathlessness sometimes, this is not always during movement. I have had two EKG done when I had my panic attack and both came back normal. The anziety began a few months ago after. My husband had a grand mal seziure in front of me, this was a first and he has now been diagnosed with epilepsy. The stress of it all was a little to much and it affected my stress levels a lot. Since quitting I have become so worried about my own health, is this a part of anziety ? I don't know what to do because a part of me wants to get into exercise a lot, but I'm worried I will drop dead.

Brief Answer:
Nice to know that you are health conscious

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I am glad to hear that you are more health conscious now.

Eating healthy diet and regular exercises would take you a long way.

Quitting weed is another feather in your cap.

Your breathlessness is most probably is related to anxiety. If the anxiety is severe, you may benefit from clonazepam tablets.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
