What Causes Numbness In The Legs While Suffering From Migraine?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Oct 2016
Question: My daughter is 20 years old, a straight A student in college. She has for about 4 years suffered from migraines and has been hospitalized for complicated migraines symptoms were left sided weakness and numbness, and dizziness. She has had two such events. Her pediatrician ordered a CT scan did not show anything. Her symptoms of course resolved before she left the hospital, her most recent hospital visit was in XXXXXXX 2016. Recently she has been feeling really tired and last night she called me in the middle of the night with extreme numbness in legs. She said she could walk but they were extremely numb. This lasted for about 2 hours. She had also lost weight and has been drinking a lot of water. Her pediatrician checked her for diabetes and checked her thyroid gland. She said they were both normal. Please help.

Brief Answer:
She should start anti-migraine therapy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted the details of your daughter and agree that she is probably getting "mini-strokes" due to complicated migraine. Further evaluation should include MRI brain with angiogram to exclude any ischemic (decreased blood flow) lesions and narrowing of brain arteries (blood vessels). Blood tests for cholesterol and homocysteine should also be checked.

I presume she is not on hormones and she does not smoke.

At present, she should start anti-migraine therapy with topiramate to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
