What Causes On And Off Shooting Pains On Right Temple Area?
Question: I have been getting sharp shooting pains on and off for a few hours in my right temple. I'm wondering if this could be TMJ. I have TMJ but while I have had pain before do not recall pain lasting this long. The pain is in front of but above ear area. Also tight feeling around joint in front of ear. No weakness in rest of body. If not TMJ any other ideas? Should i be worried and go to hospital? Already took aspirin but hasn't seemed to help.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) would normally present with symptoms concentrated in the region of the jaw.
It is possible that the symptoms are related to neuralgia. Since it is in this region may be trigeminal neuralgia though this is your first episode.
The trigeminal nerve is made up of different parts that are responsible for sensation and movement in different parts of the face.
The three parts of the opthalmic division (supplies the area around the temple and eye area), the maxillary (around the check area) and the mandibular.
Neuralgia refers to abnormal function or structure of a nerve. This can cause pain and abnormal sensations such as burning, pinching, sticking , stabbing discomfort.
CAUSES: (1)most commonly idiopathic- cause is not known
(2)presence of a mass affecting the nerve
(3)blood vessel may also compress a nerve. In addition it is also possible that the blood supply to a nerve may be affected
(4)inflammatory diseases such as sarcoidosis
(5)MS
(6)lack of vitamin b12 or folate can also cause neuralgia
(7)diabetes
In many cases, the symptoms may resolve with no intervention. It is normally not emergency but can be assessed by visiting your family doctor unless the pain in intolerable.

What is best temporary treatment? Ice or hear? Aleve? Thanks.
