What Causes Pain And Tenderness In Right Testicle After Taking Azithromycin?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Diagnosed with chlamydia after a sexual encounter in mid-January 2015. Provided 1g Azithromycin single does at health clinic. About a week later experienced aching pain and tenderness in right testicle. Physician's Assistant prescribed 7 days of doxycycline, 100mg twice daily.

My immune system hasn't felt 100% the entire time.

One month later (mid-February 2015), I still have soreness and heaviness in right testicle and the occasionally feeling like I have to urinate (UTI-type symptom that comes and goes). It's FEB 17, and I've been off all antibiotics since FEB 5. I have not retested per CDC guidelines of "no need for retest."

I understand that DNA from the infection can hang around. Could I still have active Chlamydia after the regimen and timeline described above?

Brief Answer:
Get Ultrasound Scanning of Scrotum done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you had Chlamydia infection in XXXXXXX and have taken single shot of Erythromycin..followed by Doxicycline for a week. Now you have soarness and heaviness of Right Testicle .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Was diagnosis of Chlamydia confirmed by swab test of urethra discharge?
2) Have you ever done ultrasound scanning of Scrotum.?
3) Was culture of urethral discharge done ?

The pain and heaviness in Right testicle is mostly due to infection with secondary hydrocele

Orchitis takes long time to get cured completely and one has to take appropriate antibiotic as per culture report with anti inflammatory drug like Diclofenac twice daily at least for 4 weeks to get it cured completely..

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done ,
1) Repeat swab test and culture of Urethral Discharge
2) Ultrasound Scanning of Scrotum.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexime along with anti inflammatory drug like Diclofenac and urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Doctor, thank you for your response.

To answer your questions:
1) Was diagnosis of Chlamydia confirmed by swab test of urethra discharge?
- The chlamydia diagnosis was confirmed by urine test only.

2) Have you ever done ultrasound scanning of Scrotum?
- No, I have seen one urologist since the Chlamydia diagnosis. He thought it was post Chlamydia epididymitis. He advised Ibuprofen 400-600mg twice daily for pain.

3) Was culture of urethral discharge done?
- No, because I did not have discharge as a symptom.

What specific questions should I ask my urologist next week during my follow-up visit? Thank you again for your time.
