What Causes Pain And Tightness In The Chest?
Question: about 9 days ago I hurt my sternum. I have pain and tightness in the middle of my chest and it hurts to breath. is it possible that I have bruised or cracked it eventhough there is no swelling or discoloration?
Brief Answer:
Yes
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
There is a chance of cracking the sternal bone, yes you may be right. However no active intervention is needed at this moment even if there is actually a crack. it is better to just treat the visible skin and subcutaneous bruise.
You should get an Xray of the chest to confirm a crack.
You should take over the counter pain killers available to weed out the pain for a week.
Your doctor can prescribe you muscle relaxants and sleep inducers which can be of great relief.
You can meet one for a prescription of the same which has clobazam, Tizanidine etc.
Let me know if you have other concerns.

I will plan on getting an x-ray. I will try to be careful and curtail some things that would seem obvious such as lifting heavier items and twisting and tuening too much. But is it ok to pursue normal activities like driving and walking or should I be lying down for a few days?

Continue normal activities
Detailed Answer:
