Brief Answer:
Need clarification....
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The details are very broad to understand the problem. Can you provide information about the duration (since when this pain started), precise location of pain, whether it is on both sides, his description of pain, does it get worse with breathing / coughing.
And I would also like to know about other associated symptoms such as cough, breathing issues if any.
May I know his age? And if he has any other past medical illness such as asthma, COPD, tuberculosis.
It would be better if you can provide an elaborate detailed history as discussed above.
Regards

Brief Answer:
Seems muscular pain
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The information wasn't complete. Nevertheless from the details provided it seems to be a muscular ache. However it is wise to consult a physician who can perform a physical examination. Chest radiograph (X-ray) may be advisable to make sure we don't miss anything.
Until then he can continue using pain killers / topical cream. Encourage him to rest and avoid physically strenuous activities / exercises.
Hope this helped.
