What Causes Pain In Back Of Legs And Hip?

Question: I have leg pain mostly confined to the posterior of the right thigh. Sometimes the pain is in the right buttock and less often in the calf muscle. I had been diagnosed with sacroiliitis since 2013. But I fell about a month before May 25th 2015 on my left knee and my right leg shot out. I had been undertreated for pain since then. I had been diagnosed with bursitis recently and received a shot that had lidocaine and I believe to be a cortisone shot. I wish I had the exact name, but my pain grew so severe I could barely sit. I took predinsone recently and it cut the pain in half. But today my pain is returning, as I was okay over the weekend and did not need any pain medication. Is it possible that I have a herniated disc or is the sacroiliitis causing the leg pain?

The pain at the back of the leg and hip that you have is more likely to be due to sacroilitis. In case of a lumbar disc prolapse there is a low back pain associated with a radiating pain down the leg.
The only way to confirm the diagnosis is by an MRI scan. Till then you can get some muscle relaxants and pain killers prescribed for relief. Doing a hot compress ion the area will also help.

Thank you very much Dr. Tayal. You are right of course. I do not have lower back pain at all so that rules out what you said about the lumbar disc prolapse. I really appreciated this because I've been assailed with different opinions on what is causing the radiating pain down my leg. Now I feel relieved.

Dr. Tayal, how effective are steroid shots to the sacroiliac joint? I am assuming this is where the shot will be administered. I believe that a steroid injection does not work for everyone. My pain registers at 7 right now when I am sitting at my desk. In the past it was a 10 until I took prednisone, which cut the leg pain in half. Thank you.

Cortisone shots do not help everyone. They can increase the pain initially that subsides after 4-7 days. If you are having a good relief with prednisolone then it is best to continue with prednisolone. It will help in decreasing the inflammation.
If at all necessary it is best to get the shot at sacroiliac joint after an MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis.

Dr. Tayal, I have something important to tell you where my leg pain is concerned. I had been slandered by my hospital. The slander is this: that I'm a narcotic addict and that I'm faking my pain to get Vicodin. Long story, but my physical therapists determined that my pain is real. For example, my right leg is longer than my left and this indicates that I actually told the truth about my falling on the kitchen floor months ago. However, I have been undertreated for my pain as a result of the slander. I am going to another town one day to get help but I fear that the slander will follow me there. My question is this: Should I tell my new doctor about the slander? Or should I allow him to figure out that the pain is real? I know that you are not a lawyer, however, I do not have the money to hire one.
