Brief Answer:
Can be arthritis or muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for posting your query.

The pain at the top of the buttocks that you have can be due to a muscle spasm or due to arthritic changes in the hip joint. This needs a proper direct examination and investigations like X-ray and MRI scan for proper diagnosis. Taking pain killers, calcium supplements and oral muscle relaxants can help. You can use a local analgesic gel also after a hot compress for better relief.

I hope this answers your query.

I don't think it is a spasm because it's been on and off 2-3 months...it doesn't seem to be any worse just seems to be upper buttocks one minute...then doesn't hurt...then outer buttocks muscle on both sides...then sometimes into crevice of thigh...I was worried for awhile about it being something really wrong or bad...but I've had no other correlating symptoms or anything else except this pain in my hips buttocks and thigh area...

Brief Answer:
Can be muscle spasm or tear or a nerve root compression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Since the pain is intermittent, a muscle spasm or minor tear are likely. However a nerve root compression at the level of lumbar spine also needs to be ruled out after an MRI scan.
Hope my answer is helpful.

One last question, I have an appointment but it's not for a few weeks. Are these types of muscle or butt pain that go across the buttocks (or are felt on both sides) something serious. My fear is that it is serious and I have put off getting it looked at until now. Again as I said before, I don't have any other symptoms of issues and the pain basically depends on how I sit or stand at times and other times there is no pain at all. I'm just confused and need that appointment I guess. (I am going to get a deep tissue massage next week...do you think that will help alleviate some of the pain possibly?)

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be a serious issue.

Detailed Answer:
The pain that you have is not likely to be a serious issue. This can be a postural pain also. A deep tissue massage will help in decreasing the pain.
