Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: I started taking antibiotics for H Pylori. August 21. Diahrrea went away but after 2 weeks I started feeling something in my throat and phlegm in my throat. The doctor gave antibiotic thinking is was bronchitis but didn't do anything The throat discomfort hasn't gone away and my neck started to hurt and it doesn't seem like is getting better. It only feels better when I eat but I've tried Advil, anti acids, and cold syrups.

Brief Answer:
Your problems are probably caused due to reflux

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and it seems to be due to nothing but reflux. You already had the problem of hyperacidity and gastritis for which you have been on the H pylori treatment. But it seems that the stomach acids are regurgitating into the food pipe. As the acid reaches your throat, your body tries to deal with it by producing more amounts of mucus so that the acids are not able to damage the inner lining of the food pipe. This is what you detect as phlegm and throat discomfort. Since it is not due to bronchitis, treatment for it will not help.

My suggestions would be:
* Avoid long gaps between meals. Take small but frequent meals.
* Avoid chilli and spicy foods. They trigger excess gastric acid secretion and may also mess up with digestion.
* Regular morning walk and exercise is essential to maintain proper bowel movements.
* You need to take plenty of green leafy vegetables in your diet. It will provide adequate roughage and will lessen your problems.
* You need to avoid stress. Stress is a leading cause of hyperacidity.
* PPIs like omeprazole may be taken once a day. You may also take colospa (mebeverine) after consulting your treating physician.

Hope that helps.

Thank you dr. I'm more concern about the feeling of having something stuck in my throat. It doesn't hurt but it doesn't go away. It's been over 10 days. I'm female 31 yrs old had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago (if relevant). I was concern is it could be swollen lymph nodes due to an STD like HIV or Hep. because of the diahrrea since I was with someone new June/July. I got tested in August 20 and it was negative. I don't know if it's my nerves or if it's reflux.

Brief Answer:
The sensation is more likely to be due to reflux

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond earlier.

Let me assure you that the sensation in your throat is likely to be real and due to reflux, and not due to your nerves or STD/HIV. The swollen lymph nodes could be due to some localized infection but a proper clinical examination is needed to be certain about the underlyng cause. If you have already got tested, I do not think that you need to panic. In fact, worrying will increase the stomach acid secretion and would make things worse.

I trying not to worry because the clinic told me it can take from 3-6 months. I feel better. My bowel movements are back to normal. No nausea. I never had heartburn but my upper stomach does hurt sometimes. My throat it's itchy and it makes me cough. The feeling in my throat still there like skin tissue hanging in my throat but no pain. The throat issues started a week after the h pylori antibiotics 2 weeks concluded beginning of September. I was hoping to go away but it hasn't. I have an apointment soon for a physical and gyno. What do you recommend me to ask? Thank you for all your help and quick response.

Brief Answer:
Just ask him to check whether he seems to find any other problem

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster this time.
Its good to hear that you are doing better than earlier although I understand that the throat irriation still bothers you. It would be good for you to visit your doctor. When you visit him, ask him to check whether he feels that there could be any other cause behind such a thing. Otherwise I do not have anything specific that you might need to ask; just feel free to ask whatever you desire to know.

Feel free to ask me back in case of further queries in the future.

In case you found my answer to be helpful, I would be glad if you close it with a postive review and a 5 star rating.

Wishing you health.
