What Causes Pain In Neck In The Thyroid Gland Area?

Thyroid
Detailed Answer:
When I see someone who presents to my practice with symptoms such as yours i typically order the following tests, obviously in addition to a thorough history and physical examination :
CBC
CMP
TSH
Free T4
If the thyroid function tests ie TSH and Free T4 are normal then it implies that the likelihood of 'thyroiditis' is small. Thyroiditis is a temporary bruising of the thyroid gland that can cause pain and swelling of the thyroid. Often blood tests for the thyroid also look abnormal in this condition.
Further testing, if at all necessary, depends on the type of abnormality in the TSH and free T4 result.
If there is a prominent swelling of the the thyroid then an Ultrasound test can be done to get a better picture of the the structure of the thyroid
