Hello XXXXXXX
Regarding the right kidney area pain when you feel the need to urinate, this should be evaluated. Given your history of UTIs, it may be an infection higher up. It may also be a kidney stone.
I have a few questions for you:
How many UTIs do you think you have had in recent months?
What has been done so far to evaluate the frequent pattern of your UTIs?
Have you had any imaging studies yet regarding the kidney pain?
When you have had UTIs, have cultures been done during the UTI and again after it has been treated?
Your answers to these questions will help me provide more specific information. Thanks.

Hi, I get the uti about every 5 months or so. The only thing that has been done is put me on antibiotics, which was cipro. This is something new I am feeling now. I am seeing Dr. tomorrow. No I haven't had any imaging done yet. What type of imaging should I have?

A few thoughts:
Sometimes when post menopausal women get frequent UTIs, it is due to the urogenital tissues no longer being robust which increases the risk of UTIs. If this is the case, a vaginal estrogen such as Estrace can improve the health of the tissues and prevent frequent UTIs.
You should have a complete urinalysis (sent to the lab, not just a "dip urinalysis which is done in the office), and if indicated, a culture and antibiotic sensitivity test done on the urine. This tells what bacteria is the problem and which antibiotics would be effective.
Another thing to do since you have repeat UTIs: after a UTI has been treated you should have a repeat urine culture 2 weeks afterwards to make sure it has cleared.
Given the repeated nature of your UTIs, you should have a renal scan too. If that is normal, a voiding urethrogram may help if there is a problem with the bladder such as it refluxing up into the urethra. This latter test would be done by a urologist. I would suggest waiting on the second test, but a renal scan will help show if there are problems with the kidney now.
