What Causes Pain In The Right Side Of The Abdomen?

Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,
1. I'm having a dull stomach pain since yesterday. It's on the right side to near the middle of my abdomen , about the same level with my belly button or a little below. What problem could it be? What should I do? I had pelvic ultrasound about 3 months ago, it was okay.

Brief Answer:
Possible appendicitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome,

First, this location of pain is quite suggestive of appendicitis especially if there is any associated nausea, vomiting or fever. In this case, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Otherwise, it may be an ovarian cyst (rupture), a urinary stone or even diverticulosis.

These are painful but not urgent conditions and can be treated with easier diet, painkillers and rest.

You should have liquid diet, avoid coffee, alcohol (if at all consume) and spicy food. If the pain worsens then you need to do CT scan to rule out some other pathologies which may not be seen on the ultrasound.

Wish you good health. Feel free to ask further queries.
Regards

Hello Dr. Brain,

Thank you for your answers.

First of all, I hope it's not appendicitis because there is no nausea, vomitting or fever involved. This pain comes and goes, sometimes lasts only for 5 mins, sometimes 1 hour, then goes away, going on for 4 days now. It never occurs in the morning after I just wake up. The pain is not intolerable, just mild. I don't need any pain killer.

Today, it only happened once or twice for about 5-10 minutes.

I had ovaries ultrasound 3 months ago. It was fine. I don't drink coffee or alcohol or spicy food.

Should I just observe it right now?

Thank you.
Best regards

Brief Answer:
Yes

Detailed Answer:
Yes, you can wait and see if some new symptoms will develop. If there is no constant pain and associated symptoms then I don't think this is serious. It may be some intestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome or biliary colic.

Watch for your diet and take enough fluids and see if pain wil worsen in next several days.
