What Causes Pain In The Throat While Swallowing?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jul 2016
Question: Hi I have pain in left tonsill when swallowing. This all started the day I poked my left tonsill as there was a stone and hasn't improved after that day. The tonsill is not swollen at all. This has been going on for 7 weeks. On three different occasions I had tonsill stones under the crypt. I used my finger to take them out. I saw them yesterday too and pushed the hidden ones out and I also have clicking sound in my left ear when I swallow. What can be done in my case as the swallowing food is not improving. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Routine medication will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The repeated handling of the tonsil area while removing the tonsilloliths can lead to a sore throat.

2. A short course (3-5 days) of routine medication such as a broad spectrum antibiotic (such as amoxycillin + clavulanic acid 625 mg twice a day), an anti-allergic (such as cetirizine or fexofenadine once a day), an anti-inflammatory medication (such as paracetamol, ibuprofen twice a day after meaks) and a medicated oral rinse (such as Betadine gargles) will settle this down.

3. The clicking sounds while swallowing are due to the normal movements of muscles, tendons, cartilages.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

But its been going on for 7 weeks. And the clicking sound only comes from my left war upon swallowing. I am scared and hope its not anything serious. Cause i have never had anything like this and this is the first time it happened after i poked my tonsill to take the stone out which was under the crypt. Thank you

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The clicking sounds are normal.

2. Behind the tonsil area is a complex set of bones, muscle, tendons, cartilages (including those attached to the Eustachian tube , which connects the ear to the nose). Hence, hearing these sounds is common and does not interfere with function.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you. So will this clicking sound remain for life? Can anything be done to calm it down?

Brief Answer:
The sounds will decrease in time.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The clicking sounds will decrease as the infection and inflammation in the area reduces with treatment.

2. This is in addition to the natural healing process.

3. These clicking sounds, however slight, at times are usually heard by normal people if they concentrate on these sounds.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
