What Causes Pain In The Upper Right Abdomen After A HIDA Scan?
Question: Hello,
I had HIDA scan yesterday but kinevac was not being used as it was out of stock in the whole country. Radiologist used something called boost, I did not feel any pain during the test but the very next day I can feel pain on my right abdomen since I woke up. The pain lasts till evening, can anyone please tell if this is normal due to HIDA scan? What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
Normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.
Yes,this is possible effect of the scan since test may lead to galbladder attack especially if boost drink was used since it caused more contractility of gallbladder. This residual effects can last for a while. Be careful what you eat -avoid fats, alcoholic and overeating. you can take spasmodics and nonsteroid painkillers. If fever or increased pain occur, you should see doctor since it may indicate more severe gallbladder inflammation. Wish you good health. Regards

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I have one more question, are boost and kinevac the same chemical. I mean I read everywhere they mention using kinevac. Do they function same. I did not feel anything during the scan but pain started next day morning when I woke up.

Brief Answer:
follow-up consultation
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Boost plus is taken orally as a drink and kinevac is given intravenously. These are not the same but have the same effect on gallbladder and both are used for HIDA scan with the same efficiency. Boost may cause more abdominal discomfort but it is usually self-limiting and it should pull back in few days.
Wish you good health.

Hello,
Today my HIDA scan result came and it says 46%. Can you please advise what does this mean. As I mentioned I was used boost and not kinevac for the scan. I did not feel any pain during the exam and the whole day. Next morning i woke up with mild to medium pain on my lower right abdomen. What does this mean? Is there anything serious in my case?
Hello,
I do have a heaviness on my upper right side from before. But I do not have any pain there. Can you please advise if the result is 46%, I am getting tensed here.
Hello,
I have done ultrasound a month back and they said no stone but little bulge or inflammation something like that. What is this hepatitis marker and gastroscopy? I am reluctant to do surgery so is there any medicine that can cure this since the result for Ejaction fraction was 46%. What is laproscopic surgery?

Brief Answer:
Possible
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Yes, since there is good ejection fraction and no large stones, then you can choose conservative treatment. Ursodeoxicolic acid can be used and appropriate low fat diet followed. However, there may be pain present from time to time or more severe inflammation and then you should undergo urgent surgery. It is hard to predict what are chances of these complications, but final decision about surgery is up to you. Laparoscopic surgery means that gallbladder can be removed with camera and 3 small holes so this is minimal invasive procedure. gastroscopy is examination of stomach with camera which is introduced through mouth. Wish you good health. Regards

Hello,
What is Ursodeoxicolic acid? what does it do? I have this heaviness but pain is not always it comes and goes. Is it dangerous without gall bladder? I am following low fat diet, so if I follow low fat diet then there should be no such problem right? Can I get this heaviness removed without doing any surgery since the ejection fraction is 46%?

Hi,
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a medication used for gallbladder issues such as sludge or stones and it is taken as a pill and then it will cause dissolve of gallbladder content.
This is effective in only 50% of cases.
An appropriate diet is always beneficial and this is definitely recommended.
However, it cant be predicted how often pain will occur.
Generally, we recommend gallbladder removal if there are often gallbladder attacks and your symptoms sound like this.
Surgery is a routine procedure today and there are no bad consequences on future digestion.
In your case, it is reasonable to wait and see if pain is going to disappear on diet and Ursodeoxycholic acid. If not, then the surgery is recommended.
Hope this is clear now.
