What Causes Pain, Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Hands?
Cause of tingling, numbness
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, thanks for asking from HCM.
I can understand your concern. You are having symptoms of nerve compression and followed by "neuropraxia".
During sleep, you acquire certain posture that may cause compression of your upper limb nerves (radial, ulnar, median nerves) between your soft tissue and underlying mattress.
It is a very common cause of tingling, numbness, temporary weakness, sometimes pain in hand after awakening. The good thing is it disappears after some time on its own.
Now in your case, the symptoms have started 2 months ago. SO there might be possibility of some neuropathy inducing factor which is precipitating your symptoms. Few other causes of neuropathy could be ruled out only after confirming neuropathy by
- Nerve conduction velocity and electromyography to rule out neuropathy
After confirmation, get
- Blood sugar level - To rule out diabetes mellitus
- B12 level - Vitamin B12 level can become low in case of chronic alcohol intake, poor nutrition, intestinal disease
- Folic acid level - Similar to B12, it can become low with above causes
- If still uncertainty, then nerve biopsy of peripheral sensory nerve to confirm biopsy and also the disease
- Also tell your doctor about any medication you are taking for long duration. Drug induced neuropathy must be ruled out.
Till confirmatory tests, you can do few things like
- Sleep on soft mattress
- Avoid same posture throughout whole night
- You can use soft pillows between your bony parts and mattress to prevent compression over nerves e.g.
- Put pillows between your knees
- Put small pillow between axilla/armpit which is on down side while lying lateral
- Do not put your arm below your head while lying lateral
Hope it will help you. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
