What Causes Pain Under Breast Bone While Swallowing While On Clindamycin?

Posted on Tue, 24 Feb 2015
Question: I was on clyndamyacin for bronchitis and sinusitis. I had to stop taking it because my esophagus was burning , even swallowing water was hurting. When I did swallow it hurts under my breastbone. It still hurts under the breastbone. I also developed an infection on my genitalia. I discovered it when I was urinating it was hurting. I thought I cut myself shaving but it was very red. i used hydrogen peroxide and it still hurts a little but it is not red anymore, but i feel a burning when I urinate at the base of my vaginal opening. I drink a lot of water but am not running to the bathroom like I usually do. I stopped the medicine a day ago when I looked into the side effects and had no idea that all of this is from the medicine. Do I need to see my gynecologist now for the infection and any other doctor for my breastbone hurting, or will these symptoms go away since I stopped the medicine? I am able to drink water again.

Brief Answer:
Give yourself a week's time.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Both the symptoms are mostly due to clindamycin.
The pain under the breastbone is gastritis.
The infection commonly occurs while on antibiotics.
Now give yourself a week's time.
If these two things persist, and I think they wont, they you need to see a physician for the persistent gastritis and a gynecologist for a vaginal swab and a urine culture to determine the infection.
Meanwhile, the following will help -
1. Have protected sex.
2. Avoid soaps, gels, cleansers, creams on the genitals, just use lukewarm water for cleansing.
3. Take probiotics , if not in the form of medications, then about 6 ounces of yoghurt daily.
4. Take chilled milk and an antacid too. Avoid oily spicy food. Drink lots of cold water.
All the best

Should I be concerned about not having much urine output at this stage or do you think I should give that about a week as well. Could I develop a kidney infection? Do I take a Tums with the milk? How often? Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Explained.

Detailed Answer:
Urine output as a rule should not be affected unless you have restricted your fluid intake.
Drink atleast 5 litres, and you should be urinating normally.
Kidney infection is not likely as symptoms of a UTI are not very severe or obvious.
You can take a Tums twice a day, that should help
