What Causes Pain Under Rib Cage While Coughing?
WHILE COUGHING, I FEEL A LIGHT PAIN UNDER MY RIGHT RIB CAGE. ALSO PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT ARE THE ROUTINE CHECK UP TO TAKE A MODERATE ALCOHOLIC PERSON
This is the cause, the treatment and this is the cure. Read carefully.
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
1. I would say a moderate pain, under your right rib cage is due to acid reflux and possible excess H+ secretion in your stomach. You mention moderate alcoholism.
There is no such thing as being a "little bit alcoholic". it's like being a "little bit pregnant."
2. Pain in any one part of the body can be signalled and felt somewhere else. This is called referred pain. Thus you feel this radiation of pain and I feel that you probably think you are getting a heart attack or have some heart problem because the pain is so close to the heart and lungs.
3. Kindly take some antacid. Take Gelusil or Digene liquid syrup. Take either famotidine or ranitidine or perhaps "omeprazole" for your acidity. That's the best
for alcohol induced acid problems.
4. For a checkup, take a blood test.
Kindly find out your SGOT, SGPT levels. Some doctors call this AST, ALT levels in blood. These are chemicals that tell a lot about your liver function. This is the first
thing affected by alcohol.
I can tell you to check for serum bilirubin. This is secondary to the above.
You need to know your Blood HB levels. It's important for you.
You need an ENT checkup (it takes 5 minutes) to check your throat (alcohol causes pharyngitis, erosive esophagitis and some gum issues.) Ask the ENT (Ear Nose and Throat Doctor) for a "Direct laryngoscopy".
Check your appetite and sleep. these are important.
5. Accept that you really, if you were asked off the record, or by a close friend, perhaps; you would admit that you don't really like drinking, right?
6. Go to www.aa.org and www.na.org
Google "Just for Today"
That according to my experience of 16 years, in watching at a close distance the horrors of alcohol addiction in patients, I can say the best chance you have ever,
of quitting alcohol is AA (The international organization Alcoholics Anonymous).
They have meetings everyday of the week and are there all over the world.
Take help, if you need it.
In confidence,
Dr. Neel Kudchadkar
