What Causes Pain Under Right Upper Knee Cap?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hi Doc, I have started to feel a slight tinge of pain under my right upper knee cap since a month. Pain is not consistent, I dont generally feel it during my busy office hours but mostly at night while lying on bed with legs either stretched straight or with bent knees. When I feel that tinge of pain I am not able to pin point its exact location under the knee cap, I have to keep pressing with my finger to locate the origin of pain. Its been 2 weeks I have started taking Calcium supplements every day and ensure that I drink atleast 1 large cup of milk every morning. Can you please provide me a diagnosis and what I should or should'nt do to improve my knee health. Will my knee recover from this pain or will it get worse with time? Any medicines that I need to take? Thanks in advance for your able advice.

Brief Answer:
You might be suffering from Chondromalacia patella

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Considering your age and your present complaints, you might be suffering from Chondromalacia patellae. But it is too early to say that you are suffering from this condition, without a proper clinical examination by an orthopaedician. Visit your doctor, get yourself examined. Your doctor will advice you to go for a xray.

Generally physiotherapy for your quadriceps muscle with straight leg raising and knee mobilisation will improve your muscle strength and will decrease the progression of symptoms.

Life style modifications like avoiding stairs, squatting, sitting cross legged will also help in reducing your symptoms. Reducing weight is of prime importance if you are overweight. If the pain is severe, you can take few doses of NSAID's or physiotherapic modalities like IFT to relieve your pain.

Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, nuts, milk, eggs, pulses and cereals. Drink 1-2 litres of water daily. Do brisk walking exercise for 40 minutes daily. Get 6-8 hours of refreshing sleep daily.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
